“In” but not “Of” the World

How sorting threatens the universal themes that connect each one of us.

I was invited to talk to a group of young people at White Memorial church to talk about John 17. This is a little talk about the pendulum swing between our tendency to isolate ourselves to keep our selves untainted and our desire to connect to the world we live in.

Geof, what a great way to explain this issue that not only Christian teens deal with on a daily basis, but also adults.
The way you presented this part of John 17 is definite proof that Jesus wasn’t only thinking of the current disciples that were following Him, but also the disciples who would follow Him in the the future. I was a student minister for 25 yrs and this was a topic that is always present and vital to discuss at different times throughout the years. It is also something that adults deal with on a daily basis, whether they want to admit it or not. We as followers of Christ must ask ourselves each day how we’re going to be in the world but not of the world. I believe that is part of our ‘here and now’ as followers of Christ each day. Thank you for sharing this and reminding me of this important truth of God’s Word.
